Like apples and oranges
While Nabokov's version is a very literal translation of Pushkin's epic poem, Sir Charles Johnston attempts to emulates the original spirit of the piece by maintaining the original epic poem's rhyme scheme. An admirable, well-executed undertaking!

Fire Suppression Practices and Procedures
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (13 December, 1991)
Authors: Eugene Mahoney and Gene Mahoney
Average review score:

A Great Foundation
This book is truely a great foundation for further study in the tactics and strategies of fire suppression. It is often difficult to find reading material covering fire suppression that is niether out dated nor too focused to provide any real benefit to the reader. As a student, I have used Brady's "Fire Suppression Practices and Procedures" in two lower division Fire Technology classes.

Author, Eugene Mahoney, brilliantly covers all areas of fire suppresion in a logical sequence. The book opens discussing "Fire Chemistry and Behavior." This first chapter briefly reviews the fire triangle, stages of fire, and fire phenomena (backdrafts, flashovers, and rollovers). The second chapter focuses on the responsibility of size up. Chapters three through five breaks up operations on the Engine, Truck, and Salvage companies. Chapter 6 covers "Basic Firefighting Tactics," including locating the fire, confining the fire, and extinguishing the fire. Fire command and the ICS system are covered in detail in Chapter 7. Mahoney concludes by covering in detail, suppression of fires in buildings, mobile equipment, and miscellaneous fires.

I would recommend this book be part of every firefighters library. A great reference book, especially useful for promotional testing.

From the Hell of the Holocaust: A Survivor's Story
Published in Hardcover by KTAV Publishing House (April, 2001)
Author: Eugene Hollander
Average review score:

A survivor's story
This book is about Eugene Hollander, a survivor of the Holocaust. He survived under the most harsh conditions which were starvation, lack of sleep, being beaten, being overworked and living in the most horrendous facilites. Whenever he was given food, it consisted of bread crusts and watery soup. He weighed less than one hundred pounds when the war was over. His bed was a wooden plank and the showers were turned on for two minutes at a time. When the shower was turned off, he had to exit immediately or he would be shot. He was moved from one concentration camp to another, and during the war years he was in many different camps. The names of the some of the camps included Auschwitz and Mathuesen. This book was an excellent description of the Holocaust for teen age readers because it described in great detail his life story and how people were treated when the Nazis ruled western Europe.

The Future of American Foreign Policy
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (Short) (January, 1992)
Authors: Charles W., Jr. Kegley and Eugene R. Wittkopf
Average review score:

A look to the Future
Wittkopf's review of the future of American Foreign policy gives the reader a firm basis in which to comprehend the intricate details that are involved in this complicated matter. He gives the reader a strong sense of the policies that will need to be incorporated into our agenda in order for this country to function well in the 21st Century. Overall a very good read.

General Surgery (Board Review Series)
Published in Paperback by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 April, 2000)
Authors: Traves D. Crabtree, Eugene F. Foley, and Robert G. Sawyer

You should buy it now !
I found this book very useful & concise. It gives you the most important issues in points rather than full text, which increases your efficiency with little effort! Its USMLE-case-type questions focus more on the treatment. I wish there could be more questions to give us more practice for the exam. It includes introduction to Anesthesiology, but unfortunately not Urology & Orthopedic surgery. In addition, it doesn't have many pictures or diagrams e.g. x-rays, diseases mechanisms.

The Geologic Story of the National Parks and Monuments, 4th Edition
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (13 September, 1985)
Authors: David V. Harris and Eugene P. Kiver
Average review score:

Essential for the Cross-Country Traveller
An excellent book for both the seasoned geologist and the layperson, although recommended for somebody with a general understanding of geology. The book is not designed as a typical 'guidebook' that would be carried along on a hike, although its text book-like dimensions are more than acceptable as a vacation companion. Fantastic for the traveller embarking on a tour of the U.S. National Parks, as the chapters are conveniently arranged according to physiographic province. Sorry, folks, but Canada and Mexico are not included. The authors admirably describe not only the geologic feature being observed, but also the 'how' and 'why' it exists. The descriptions and explanations are thorough and easy to read. Overall, the photography is fair (several of the photographs could better serve the spectacular features being discussed) and many of the figures could be more closely related to the topic. However, the majority of the figures, especially the sketched figures, are informative and easy to understand.

Geology of U.S. Parklands

Geology of U.S. Parklands, Fifth Edition
I teach a course in geology of America's National Parklands at a community college. I have tried another book for the required text for the course, with mixed success. Therefore when I found out that Geology of U.S. Parklands, fifth edition, was being released, I ordered it for the course even before I had seen my review copy. Previously when traveling I have consulted The Geologic Story of the National Parks and Monuments by the same authors, and was sufficiently impressed with the content, clarity of writing, and extent of coverage that I eagerly ordered the revised version. In my opinion this new book is THE one to use for similar college courses, and should also serve well for travelers with or without geologic training who want to know more about the geology of the magnificent federal parklands of our nation. There is a sufficient short course on general geologic principles in the initial chapter. I like the clarity, accuracy and dry humor of the text, which is better than the style and content in the book previously used - Geology of America's National Park Areas by Brooks Ellwood. Although the latter is quite a bit less expensive and has better quality if not more useful pictures, it is often too simplistic for my use in this course. I may have more to say after having used Kiver and Harris book as a text for a quarter or two, but my initial reaction to it is very favorable. Other books cover the geology of one or a few park areas, but this book has the entire country including Hawaii. However, for some reason the parklands of Alaska are excluded, probably because their inclusion could add many pages to what is already a massive volume (902 pages). I should have liked to see higher quality photographs and a lower cost, but other than those minor quibbles, this book will very likely set the standard to which all others on the subject will strive.

Global Business

Authors: Michael Czinkota, Ilkka Rankainen, Michael Moffett, and Eugene Moynihan
Average review score:

Not for the Globalization Protesters
Great intro to Global Marketplace. Of course, by now many examples and data provided in the book are somewhat outdated, but consider it a reference. The rest you can look up on the Internet. Actually, I really enjoyed the book and the course. Probably, the reason was that one of the co-authors was teaching it. Anyway, it's a great book and a nice reading.
